ssta history
The The SSTA was inaugurated on 31st October 1917.

That first meeting at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange was convened to make a representation to the Ministry of Agriculture regarding the proposed introduction of “The Testing of Seeds Order”.

This order ultimately evolved into the Fodder Plant Seeds Regulations currently in use today. The association was instrumental in the development of the germination and purity quality standards we adhere to today.

The government of the day was motivated to bring about the “Testing of Seeds Order” to improve food production in War time Britain. Similarly, the association involved itself in representing its members with research and plant breeding to further improve varieties and therefore food production.

Essentially, the activities the association engaged in during these early years have continued to this present day.
